The Montessori Method

Willowbrook Montessori's mission and philosophy is to provide a calm and peaceful environment that supports concentration. Our organized classroom environment encourages the child to be interested in learning and exploring new possibilities. We strive to be an inclusive childcare facility where kindness, empathy and respect are valued. We aim to nurture creative, independent and organized children. Montessori is an educational approach focused on individual children and their needs. Its pedagogical concepts were developed by Dr. Maria Montessori at the beginning of the 20th century. Her techniques for teaching children, based on their needs and personal interests, led to today's Montessori educational method.

Montessori called this way of teaching “preparing the child for success”. Teachers are there to guide children through small exercises to help them succeed. Through time, the exercises rise in complexity, but because the progression is so well-conceived, the child never feels that learning is a struggle.

Practical Life

In this section, children learn how to use materials and exercises from their daily lives, from pouring water from a jug to a glass, to learning how to tie a shoelace. These activities help children take care of themselves more independently, so they won't have to rely on adults to meet their basic needs.

Various studies have emerged recently that show children who were educated in the Montessori method benefit cognitively and socially later in life.

Art and Music

Materials are presented in a complementary fashion with sensorial and language activities. Children learn about people and cultures in other countries through an attitude of respect and admiration. Gaining knowledge about various countries, children begin to feel connected to the global family. Connecting children to nature and the natural environment around them gives them a better understanding of the world. Comprehensive art and music programs give children opportunities to enjoy a variety of creative activities and gain knowledge of the great masters such as Beethoven, Chopin, and Vivaldi.

Math and Sciences

Children first learn to count from 1-10, understanding the concept that each number represents a specific amount. They will learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and gain a deep comprehension of what each of these means. Through this method, Montessori offers children a solid foundation in understanding mathematics.
